Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport infrastructure project

In 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro stations and more than 66 kilometres of new metro rail, revolutionising the way Australia’s biggest city travels.

Metro means a new generation of world-class fast, safe and reliable trains easily connecting customers to where they want to go.

Customers don’t need timetables – they just turn up and go!

Aurecon is playing a major role in this transformational project that will ultimately provide capacity for a metro train every two minutes in each direction under the city – a level of service never before seen in Sydney.

Central Station

For client Laing O’Rourke, Aurecon is completing detailed design for all civil, structural and building components of the new and upgraded rail infrastructure at Central Station, in partnership with GHD and Atkins.

As part of the broader transformation of Central Station, Aurecon was engaged by Sydney Metro and Transport for New South Wales to undertake comprehensive pedestrian modelling.

City & Southwest Line-wide

City & Southwest is an extension of metro rail from the end of the Metro North West Line at Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and beyond to Bankstown. It is due to open in 2024 with seven new metro stations and 11 upgraded stations. Design commenced in late 2018.

Aurecon, with our Joint Venture Partner WSP, is working closely with Systems Connect, a partnership between CPB Contractors Pty Ltd and UGL Engineering Pty Ltd, which is delivering line-wide work to turn excavated tunnels into a working railway. This includes installing 31km of underground railway track to be laid across twin tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham.

Pitt Street Station

Aurecon is designing what will be an iconic new station at Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD.

Appointed by CPB Contractors through the consortium of Oxford Properties, CPB Contractors and Grocon, Aurecon is designing both the underground station as well as two new buildings above that will form a vibrant new commercial and residential hub around Park, Pitt and Bathurst Streets, as part of the new Sydney Metro.

Sydenham Station Upgrade

Aurecon is in partnership with GHD for construction client joint venture John Holland and Laing O’Rourke to deliver the station upgrade works at Sydenham Station.

The contract includes major railway upgrade work to the existing rail system at Sydenham Station to allow for the introduction of the Sydney Metro system and track upgrades, platform works, new buildings, water infrastructure works and new connections to other modes of public transportation.

Pedestrian Modelling

As part of the broader transformation of Sydney’s Central Station, Aurecon has been engaged by Sydney Metro and Transport for New South Wales to undertake comprehensive pedestrian modelling.

Central Station is the busiest train station in Australia in terms of customer volume, and the total number of platforms. This modelling represents one of the biggest such projects undertaken by Aurecon. It commenced with the tender of the Central Station upgrade and is ongoing.
