Asia Pacific design, engineering, and advisory company Aurecon has been recognised as one of The Australian Financial Review (AFR) BOSS 2024 Most Innovative Companies in the Professional Services category for Aurecon air® – a digital platform revolutionising the future of environmental reporting.

2024 marks the eighth year in a row that Aurecon has featured on the prestigious list, this time for accelerating the delivery of complex infrastructure projects by promoting community understanding and engagement and expediting decision-making processes.

Aurecon Chief Executive Officer William Cox said in recent years, the information required to demonstrate environmental statutory requirements had grown increasingly complex for decision-makers and community members and influenced project schedules.

“Aurecon air® reimagines environmental assessments with its ability to turn static data into dynamic insights, creating a digital experience for the reader that makes complex projects easier to understand, facilitating community engagement and speeding up decision-making for faster delivery of critical infrastructure projects.”

Aurecon air® has already proven successful in supporting major energy infrastructure projects like the Humelink transmission project.

The HumeLink digital Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), powered by Aurecon air®, received 141 formal submissions from a highly visible project in the community covering five local government areas across an area of approximately 360km in length. This illustrates that very few community members generated a formal submission to Government and the digital delivery supported community awareness and understanding of the project.

Sumaya Osman, Transgrid Environmental Planning and Approvals Manager said: "Aurecon air® has contributed to successful engagement outcomes for the HumeLink environmental assessment process. It encouraged people to engage with us on one of Australia's most critical energy infrastructure projects.

"Aurecon’s innovative use of digital tools like Aurecon air® allowed us to present vast quantities of complex environmental data and technical assessment information in a way that was more accessible, transparent and easier for the community and stakeholders to understand,” she added.

This was also evidenced by analytical monitoring reporting more than 2000 community members accessed 20,000 digital pages, providing new insight into environmental community engagement.

"The platform helps to integrate content, context and facilitate collaboration among project teams, government and community."

“Aurecon air® is about more than simplifying reports – it's driving sustainable outcomes by embedding environmental considerations into every stage of infrastructure development. The platform helps to integrate content and context and facilitate collaboration among project teams, government agencies and the community and is revolutionising how we approach complex infrastructure projects,” Cox said.

Elaborating on Aurecon's approach to innovation, Aurecon’s Chief Engineering, Eminence & Innovation Officer Tanya de Hoog said Aurecon air® had demonstrated far-reaching applications to engage communities over vast, remote areas, addressing increasing environmental and community concerns across the Asia-Pacific region, de-risking decarbonisation projects and maintaining schedules for critical energy infrastructure projects.

“Aurecon is dedicated to innovating for the biggest sustainability imperative for earth – limiting global warming, protecting communities and ecosystems, and tackling environmental, social, and technological challenges,” de Hoog said.

“From one of Australia’s first and largest renewable energy projects, to creating a breakthrough off-grid water purifying system for remote Aboriginal communities, to disrupting the construction industry with mass-engineered timber and robotics, we innovate to solve real-world problems.”

While initially designed for environmental impact reporting, Aurecon air® is expanding into new areas such as carbon markets, where the useability, accessibility and advanced user metrics mean Aurecon can tailor materials and broaden the reach of critical sustainability market reporting.

The accolade adds to Aurecon’s growing reputation as a leader in innovation and digital transformation within the engineering and infrastructure sectors. Aurecon was named AFR Most Innovative Company 2023 in Professional Services as well as Digital Transformation Leader 2023 by the Australian Financial Review.
