For the tenth year in a row, Aurecon has been named in the AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list, this year ranking as a finalist in the professional services category.
Aurecon’s decade-long achievement on this prestigious list reflects the company’s intentional and sustained investment in innovation that has focused on empowering its people to solve their clients’ toughest problems.

This year’s result recognises a first-of-its-kind AI solution developed with South Australia’s electricity transmission network operator, ElectraNet. With demand for electricity forecast to double to more than 6.5 GW over the next 15 years and as the State approaches 100% net renewables, the solution combines human expertise with technology to facilitate Connection Enquiry Responses (CER) for new customers and sustainable generators.
"We’re proud to have delivered a number of really impressive innovations that have improved the lives of people and their communities consistently for the past 10 years."
Louise Adams, Aurecon CEO
Aurecon Chief Executive Officer Louise Adams said making the AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list for the past ten years reflects the company’s optimistic approach to partnering with clients.
“We believe the world needs people who can engineer possibilities. Our people are the ones who are partnering with clients and asking ‘what if” when others see ‘what is’ to engineer smarter, better and more resilient solutions,” Adams said.
“The world has changed significantly over the past decade and so have our clients and their problems. What hasn’t changed is our people’s focus on pushing harder to find what's possible and we’re proud to have delivered a number of really impressive innovations that have improved the lives of people and their communities consistently for the past 10 years,” Adams said.
Over the past decade, Aurecon’s recognition in the AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list has included Project Gilghi, an off-grid water treatment solution for remote communities; siteLab, a digital platform supporting stakeholder involvement in infrastructure design; and Murdoch University’s Boola Katitjin, which trialled robotics in timber construction.
More recent recognition includes Aurecon air®, which reimagines environmental reporting and the environmental planning digital ecosystem, developed to de-risk infrastructure projects.
This year’s award submission featured an AI solution to help ElectraNet manage increased volumes of CERs as interest in connecting to SA’s electricity network reaches unprecedented levels. The AI solution streamlines the CER process by automating repetitive tasks like data ingestion, process flow and creation of technical documents based on engineering decisions, while maintaining the quality and rigour required for safe, secure grid connections.
"Our ten-year track record of success shows what’s possible when you bring engineering expertise, digital capability and client co-creation to a problem that matters."
Tanya de Hoog, Aurecon Chief Engineering, Eminence and Innovation Officer
Aurecon Chief Engineering, Eminence and Innovation Officer Tanya de Hoog said Aurecon focuses its innovation efforts where it can make the greatest difference for clients and projects.
“Our ten-year track record of success shows what’s possible when you bring engineering expertise, digital capability and client co-creation to a problem that matters – in this year’s case for the energy transition and South Australia’s economic future,” de Hoog said.
“At Aurecon we’re intentional about investing in understanding our clients’ most important challenges and developing new ways to solve them. To continue achieving this we’ll focus efforts on nurturing our people’s curiosity at every stage of a career at Aurecon – from graduate to design director – so they are empowered to turn new ideas into meaningful outcomes for our clients.
“At Aurecon, people are at the heart of how we innovate,” added de Hoog. “While technology allows us to explore more possibilities, draw on knowledge differently and test ideas in new ways, our people bring the expertise, creativity and judgement to determine what’s relevant and valuable.”
