Melbourne Metro Concept Design, Australia

Melbourne Metro is a critical city-shaping project that will overhaul Melbourne's rail network, resulting in major improvements in capacity, reliability and travel times across the bulk of the metropolitan rail lines

Along with additional rail works and operational changes to the existing network, Melbourne Metro will enable the creation of four independent rail lines which will greatly improve train punctuality and deliver increased passenger capacity across the network.

The Department of Transport (now Public Transport Victoria) appointed Aurecon in 2009, in association with Mott MacDonald, Sinclair Knight Merz (now Jacobs) and Grimshaw Architects, to the role of Technical Advisors for the development of concept designs for Melbourne Metro as part of the 2010 business case for the project.

As part of the 2010 business case, the route and station options were identified and evaluated, then sufficient development of the preferred route and station concepts were carried out to determine the project scope, risk, programme and cost estimate.

As lead Technical Advisors, Aurecon were responsible for the overall assignment management, site investigations, traction power, tunnelling, stations, tunnel ventilation, fire and life safety, track and alignment, signalling and the overall production of concept development reports.

The project involves the construction of a nine kilometre rail tunnel through inner Melbourne to link the Sunbury and Pakenham/Cranbourne rail lines and includes five new underground stations to be located at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

In 2015, Aurecon, in joint venture with Jacobs and Mott MacDonald (AJM Joint Venture), were appointed as the technical, planning and engagement advisors for the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority for the Metro Tunnel project.
