The annual volume of shipping containers moving through Port Botany in New South Wales, Australia, is expected to increase significantly over the coming decades, placing increasing pressure on Sydney’s metropolitan freight network.
Delivery of the Cabramatta Rail Loop Project will increase the capacity of the network and allow more freight movements by rail.
The new 1.65 km section of track will allow freight trains travelling in either direction to pass each other, providing a supply chain solution that enables freight owners to transport more containers by rail and help reduce road congestion.
Aurecon is the independent project verifier for the design and construction phases of the project, having gained experience in similar roles on rail networks across Australia and globally.
The project will provide the capacity required to meet forecast rail demand generated by the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal, Enfield Intermodal Terminal, the future St Marys Intermodal Terminal, and possible other future inland terminals.
Aurecon’s role on behalf of the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is to verify that the design and construction methodology is compliant with all requirements. This includes compliance with Australian rail track and signalling standards, and compliance with the project’s scope of works and technical criteria, and project contracts.
The project includes track and rail bi-directional signalling, construction of new rail track, construction of two new bridges and reconfiguration of road alignments.

As a part of Aurecon’s role, we are considering how the new infrastructure will interface with existing rail track infrastructure and adjoining properties in the city setting. This includes working collaboratively with Sydney Trains to incorporate their requirements into the final design, together with ensuring design compliance with network reliability requirements.
Ancillary work will include communication, signalling and power upgrades, works to existing retaining and noise walls, drainage work and protecting, and relocating service utilities. In addition, new signalling will be installed at several locations within the rail corridor.
Efficient access to and from Port Botany is critical to the economic growth and prosperity of Sydney.
The Cabramatta Loop Project will alleviate the pressure from additional rail freight demand, improving the reliability of the network and enabling the efficient movement of freight across the broader Sydney rail network.
It also strongly supports the Australian and New South Wales Governments’ aim to increase the share of freight that is moved by rail.
Aurecon is drawing on its significant experience in operational rail environments to assist with the delivery of this important piece of rail infrastructure, together with the Botany Rail Duplication, another Australian Rail Track Corporation project being delivered in parallel.
