Upgrading the Sydney Harbour Bridge to extend its lifespan
The Bridgeworks Alliance (BWA) was formed to deliver strengthening and upgrade works on the Sydney Harbour Bridge designed to significantly extend the lifespan of the structure.

As a critical artery in the Sydney transport network with intensive stakeholder interest, the project risks were both extensive and of a truly diverse nature. Aurecon performed the role of lead design consultant for the Alliance and worked as an integral member of the project team responsible for delivering this challenging project.
The upgrade works were unique, technically demanding requiring exacting tolerances, and on a scale never previously undertaken in Australia. In response to the significant challenges, the Alliance developed ground-breaking solutions. These included an innovative arch access system, industry-leading levels of safety, and an uncompromising approach to quality commensurate with a heritage listed global icon.
The BWA Design Team was an integral part of the Alliance and participated in all aspects of the success of the project, including safety, quality, heritage, environmental, stakeholder, traffic, programme and cost management.
The success of the team was directly related to the culture developed within the Alliance and the quality of relationships. These led to the identification of the innovative solutions which produced outstanding outcomes in all the key result areas for both the client and the team.
In managing the successful delivery of the project, BWA focused on innovation and planning to achieve the ambitious project objectives. This approach was found to be the most effective method to drive the team to achieving high efficiencies and delivering value for money.
