To host national and international sporting and cultural events, Eden Park in Auckland underwent a major redevelopment to increase its seating capacity to 60,000 and to provide a world-class, multi-use, multicultural venue for spectators and the media.
It is now New Zealand’s largest and most significant stadium, hosting cricket, rugby and other sporting, cultural and entertainment events for over 100 years, including the 1950 Empire Games, Cricket World Cups in 1992 and 2015 and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
As an destination that caters to a wide range of fans from New Zealand’s diverse, multicultural communities, this redevelopment has progressed facility design to offer highly innovative, user-friendly and more durable structures driven by the latest technologies and world-class design features.
To meet the challenging demands of this nationally significant project, Aurecon was engaged from 2008 – 2010 to provide structural engineering, ground engineering, facade and wind engineering, day lighting and shading analysis, and sports lighting design services. Aurecon also provided specialist geotechnical and seismic engineering to the project, producing a site specific earthquake spectrum.
The stadium now boasts a 50,000 permanent seating capacity, which was temporarily increased to 60,000 for the 2011 rugby events.
The upgrade included constructing a three-tier 22,000-seat South Stand, a 12,000-seat, two-tier East Stand, a Western Concourse, and modifications to the existing ASB Bank Stand to accommodate a new state-of-the-art sports lighting system to enable high definition television broadcasting.
Aurecon’s solution resulted in several New Zealand firsts to support the major features involved in the project. These included:

Aurecon has continued our engagement with Eden Park to realise their ambition of New Zealand’s preeminent multipurpose event space. Further engagement has expanded its usability, offering additional recreational opportunities to the community, and resulting in additional revenue streams.
Our work has included engineering for the 35-metre jumbo screen and acoustic barrier to protect neighbours from acoustic impacts of concerts and provide a better visual experience for attendees, as well as high end stand analysis for vibration to confirm appropriateness for the stadium to host concerts.
The project has won the following award:
