Auckland’s expanding population and limitations on its existing transport system require a high-capacity, high-quality transport network to match increasing demand.
To enhance the network and provide more direct connections within the city, Auckland Transport has initiated the City Rail Link (CRL), which will connect Britomart Station with the North Auckland Line at Mt Eden Station.
CRL is a 3.4 km underground rail line consisting of twin driven tunnels, and cut and cover construction, as deep as 33 m below ground, with two underground stations and a new surface platform at Mt Eden. It also includes 0.725 km for an east-facing connection and 1.33 km of modifications to the North Auckland Line.
Aurecon and its project partners were appointed as principal advisors to provide technical engineering support for Auckland Transport.
The team undertook a value management phase with Auckland Transport in areas of the concept design where there may be a potential reduction in risk, cost, environmental impact, and property acquisition. To reduce cost and improve operational reliability an option was proposed to redevelop the existing Mt Eden Station and connect it to the CRL rather than build a new underground station at Newton, which was originally included in the concept design. This redesign had significant operational and customer benefits. On 1 August 2014, Auckland Transport announced that it had decided to go ahead with this alternative.
The City Rail Link is expected to begin construction in 2015/16. The project will significantly improve transport access into and around the Auckland city centre and will facilitate economic growth and support a rapidly growing population.
