Plans are underway to design Harbour Park, 1.85 ha of public space that sits on the waterfront in the heart of Barangaroo, Sydney. It will be a place of meeting, connecting and experiencing Sydney, able to accommodate a range of activities and events.
The New South Wales Government wanted to invite communities to help prioritise features and facilities to ensure it met their expectations and requirements. Faced with the challenge of designing an engagement programme to motivate the busy and transient weekday business community as well as involve local residents and Barangaroo visitors, Aurecon’s visualisation specialists devised a gamification solution.
The easy-to-use and engaging 'Design your Barangaroo Harbour Park' online game offered diverse audiences access to provide feedback on the draft design and build their own park digitally at a time that suited them.
A pop-up live site near Harbour Park promoted the game to community and visitors. A creatively designed pop-up container, it provided project information and access to the game so that users could play on large digital touch screens.
Essentially a gamified version of a community survey, users were able to animate the scene of their ‘ideal park’ by selecting five assets, such as sustainable features, accessibility, environmental aspects, and art and cultural installations. It was a fun and engaging way to incorporate feedback to inform the park’s final features and design.
Aurecon’s community and engagement specialists joined the visualisation team at the pop-up to answer community questions, and used a number of channels to promote the experience within the Harbour Park area. This included social media posts, project website updates, direct e-communication to local databases, and flyers distributed locally containing a QR code to access the game.
More than 200 people made in-person submissions at the pop-up and more than 8,000 people clicked into the game online. In total, more than 50 per cent of people were domestic visitors to the area, 6 per cent international visitors, 32 per cent local residents, and the remainder workers attending their offices close by.

The park features and activities chosen by game users were included in the Harbour Park design competition brief released by Infrastructure NSW. The team selected to deliver the park design has included features prioritised by the public in the Design Your Harbour Park online game.
This role by Aurecon continues our involvement at Barangaroo, after designing the Reserve and Cutaway, Barangaroo Ferry Wharf and building services for Barangaroo Tower.
