Aurecon has assisted Optus to deploy mobile network programmes since 1992, working on the design and acquisition of nearly 5,000 greenfield base stations and over 5,800 site upgrades. Mobile network deployment programmes are large, complex and involve many small projects each with specific characteristics.

The Optus SAED programmes involved the acquisition, environmental approvals and design of new and upgraded base transceiver stations throughout metropolitan and rural areas. Aurecon is responsible for the first phase of deployment, providing project management, design (civil, structural, electrical, geotechnical), environmental planning, community consultation, and property acquisition expertise.

Aurecon’s multidisciplinary capabilities required for the project included:

  • antenna mount design;
  • structural supports for equipment shelters;
  • equipment ventilation;
  • power supply;
  • earthing;
  • lightning protection;
  • prevention of dust ingress;
  • cable access; and
  • occupational Health & Safety requirements
