Asia Pacific design, engineering and advisory company, Aurecon has secured the opportunity to conduct an innovation trial incorporating generative AI in the request-for-information (RFI) process, aiming to significantly enhance efficiency in infrastructure projects.
In an Australian first initiative by Transport for NSW (TfNSW), the trial is part of the 'Gateway to Innovate' program that enables proponents to test innovative ideas on transport projects, ultimately uplifting productivity for the sector.

After an incredible response – over 3,100 participants engaging with the program and 66 innovative submissions – Aurecon’s AI solution was one of three selected to begin pilots.
Aurecon stood out for ClaRFI, a digital tool built on generative AI that can interpret complex RFIs and collect relevant information from multiple sources within the database to provide guidance for responses. ClaRFI has demonstrable success, including up to 50 per cent time savings for developing responses to RFIs on construction projects.
Dave Mackenzie, Aurecon Managing Principal, Digital said, “Aurecon is committed to driving innovation and digital transformation in the infrastructure sector. Our unique blend of expertise results in digital solutions that are both technologically advanced and applicable to some of the most complex challenges facing industry."
“A typical transport project involves hundreds of requests for information if not more. Reducing the response time while improving quality, relevance and consistency of the responses across the project life is an effective way to increase efficiency and free up our engineers to focus on more complex problems as well as accelerate construction programs.”

ClaRFI features a user-friendly interface that tracks the lifecycle of requests, actions and responses while efficiently categorising and routing RFIs to appropriate subject matter experts.
Mackenzie explained, “The goal of using ClaRFI is not just to automate the response process but also help the subject matter experts to locate the information they need to complete the task quickly and accurately, so that they can develop consistent and high-quality responses. Infrastructure projects often span long periods of time. ClaRFI can retain valuable project data generated over time and improve information consistency to minimise the impact of personnel changes as projects evolve.”
“ClaRFI is a great example of how AI can be used to tackle productivity challenges in construction.”
The trial will be carried out in 2025. Get industry updates from TfNSW here.
