Asia Pacific engineering consultancy Aurecon was the technical advisor for the Australian Government’s Grid Enhancing Technologies (GET) Grant Program, which will provide $30 million in competitive grants to 14 technology projects designed to strengthen the resilience and performance of Australia’s energy grid.
As renewable energy generation connections accelerate and electricity demand grows, network operators face increasing pressure to make better use of infrastructure while maintaining reliability, managing costs and connecting more renewable generation.

The funded projects will support deployment of a diverse range of technologies and solutions, including shared solar and battery optimisation, dynamic connection limits, thermal management of transformers and a platform for visualising network constraints.
Aurecon acted as the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s technical advisor, providing advice on the technical merits and technical feasibility of more than 200 funding applications within a compressed timeframe.
"We looked beyond the technology itself to consider how each solution could perform within the network and its potential to boost grid reliability, support greater renewable generation

and manage network costs."
Aurecon Principal, Infrastructure & Energy Advisory Steven Bondio said the analysis required more than solely understanding whether the technologies could work.
“Our technical understanding of power network technologies, combined with our experience of the regulatory and grid connection environment, meant that we were uniquely placed to advise on the technical merit of each technology and its ability to achieve the outcomes identified by applicants,” Bondio said.
“We supported the Assessment Committee’s consideration of the proposed funding, deliverables and project partners, as well as the evidence supporting the proposed outcomes.
“Importantly, we looked beyond the technology itself to consider how each solution could perform within the network and its potential to boost grid reliability, support greater renewable generation and manage network costs.
“With the energy transition, technologies are evolving quickly and industry is wanting technologies that can deliver meaningful value at pace.”
The program is one example of Aurecon applying technical expertise to help clients understand how emerging technologies can create value for the energy sector, businesses and communities as the energy transition continues.
In South Australia, Aurecon is collaborating with ElectraNet on a Generative AI pilot exploring how to address complex challenges across renewable energy generation, storage and transmission.
