Asia Pacific design, engineering and advisory company, Aurecon, is collaborating on a Generative AI pilot to tackle complex challenges in renewable energy generation, storage and transmission.

The first of its kind AI proof of concept (PoC) tool is being developed with ElectraNet, which designs, operates and manages South Australia’s electricity transmission network and infrastructure.

Aurecon’s Group Director, Digital & AI, Dave Mackenzie, said the collaboration between Aurecon and ElectraNet will build on the company’s AI enablement journey.

“Bringing AI into ElectraNet’s systems will expedite and streamline their process, enabling ElectraNet’s engineers to focus on more complex projects, modernise its operations, and save on operational costs.”

“Ultimately, we are supporting ElectraNet in ensuring communities and industries have access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy and South Australia can transition to 100% net renewable energy on an annual basis by 2027.

Mackenzie said that following the initial pilot, the tool, which combines Generative AI and specialised system domain expertise to solve complex problems, could be scaled across ElectraNet to expand coverage and integration across its systems.

Aurecon’s Managing Director, Energy, Paul Gleeson, said AI’s role had begun to be increasingly significant as the world required more efficient energy systems.

“The positive effects of AI in supporting the world’s energy needs include enhancing the management and integration of renewables, the stabilising of electricity grids, the forecasting of energy demand and the minimising of energy waste.”

Aurecon’s comprehensive digital capabilities in AI enablement, coupled with technical knowledge of Australia’s energy market and systems positions the company as an industry leader in partnering with companies to assist them with their renewable energy transition.

The project is set to be delivered within five months.
