Asia Pacific engineering consultancy Aurecon has been appointed to deliver Integrated Project Management Services for the construction of the critical hybrid renewable energy project Gawara Baya.
Comprising a 408MW wind farm and a 104MW grid-forming battery energy storage system, Gawara Baya is located on an active cattle property on Gugu Badhun Country in North Queensland, Australia.

Providing clean power to up to 240,000 Australian homes, the project is key to driving progress against time-critical decarbonisation and renewable energy supply. Gawara Baya is an essential opportunity for new, large, clean, responsibly developed energy generation that is grid connected via existing transmission infrastructure. It will be producing power within the next few years and fully operational by 2030.
Gawara Baya has received all regulatory approvals, including an Australian industry-first Biodiversity Net-Gain Strategy, developed with Aurecon, that applies nature positive principles to avoid or minimise biodiversity impacts, restore regional ecosystems and address environmentally threatening processes during construction.
Aurecon’s Managing Director Infrastructure Performance Troy Burton said having already supported former owners Windlab to navigate the complexities of approvals and reach financial close, Aurecon will take the same collaborative, innovative and flexible approach into the construction phase of Gawara Baya.
“An Integrated Project Management (IPM) approach is suited for projects in complex and sensitive environments where a careful balance of technical expertise, regulatory compliance and strategic project management is required,” Burton said.
The IPM approach can reduce the risk and cost in the construction of wind projects especially where the coordination of multiple contractors and contracts involves a wide range of works such as road upgrades, civil and electrical works, turbine and ancillary infrastructure delivery and installation, grid synchronisation and turbine commissioning.
“Continued communication and alignment among project participants and project stakeholders and the streamlining of processes during the construction phase are all benefits of IPM that will ensure we achieve improved outcomes and responses for regional ecology and for the potential local impacts of this project together with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners,” Burton said.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), on behalf of its flagship fund Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V), has acquired Gawara Baya. The acquisition of the Gawara Baya project represents an opportunity for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to deploy near-term capital in Australia and create value for investors in its fifth flagship fund.
