From these awards, two client projects were announced as Projects of the Year in their respective chapters: Department of Defence – Joint Health Command Garrison Facilities Upgrade (ACT Chapter Awards) and RAAF Darwin – Banksian House Refurbishment (NT Chapter Awards), receiving the highest ranked score across all project winners.
Aurecon’s Program Advisory Managing Principal, Troy Burton, said the number of wins across the AIPM chapter awards is a testament to the quality of Aurecon’s project management professionals and their ability to provide clients with expert knowledge across a wide range and size of projects.
“These wins not only showcase our eminent project management professionals, but also their strong track record in fostering trusted relationships with clients in supporting complex program and portfolio designer and delivery.”
Aurecon’s Defence and National Security Managing Director, Damon Howes, was also delighted to see such a strong recognition of Defence projects.
“We are extremely proud to celebrate a number of capability outcomes delivered for Defence and share the recognition with those who contributed to the success of these projects.”
Aurecon is a proud Organisation Partner to the AIPM and continues to support the profession through our National Gold Partner sponsorship of the chapter events.
We look forward to supporting our chapter winners as they progress through to the national awards that will be held in early 2023.

The Joint Health Command (JHC), led by the dual-hatted Commander Joint Health and Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), is responsible for the delivery of healthcare services, including preventative and proactive healthcare, to maintain the operational readiness of Australia’s deployable defence forces. The AUD 212 million JHC Garrison Facilities Upgrade project is a significant achievement for both JHC and the Department of Defence’s Capital Facilities and Infrastructure Branch. In part, this is due to the unprecedented development of a national healthcare delivery model, which provides the ADF with significant ongoing operational cost savings.
Government Projects – VIC Winner
In January 2022, the Victorian Health Building Authority engaged Aurecon as a partner to manage and lead the design and construction of three highly technical, modular hospital emergency departments. These facilities were rapidly deployed to Northern Hospital (Northern Health), Werribee Hospital (Mercy Health), and Casey Hospital (Monash Health), assisting with significant COVID capacity concerns.
These innovative modular facilities, delivered within an extraordinarily tight timeframe for June 2022, are state-owned, highly technical health facilities and can be repurposed to suit emerging needs. This project is an outstanding demonstration of an agile-team approach, with a community-focused agenda, delivering best for client and patient outcomes.
Transformation Projects – VIC Winner
To support an increase in gender diversity at executive levels in the Australian Government Department of Defence, Aurecon joined forces with Defence to create a game-changing leadership and development program: Defence-Aurecon Ascend. This transformational program influences organisational and culture change within Defence by breaking down process and behavioural barriers within a historically ‘hierarchical’ organisation.
Ascend is now a significant part of the Defence gender equality strategy, and is having a sustained positive impact, driving greater gender diversity in senior leadership, catalysing innovation at a broader scale, and creating a legacy with an enduring impact into the future.

Constructed in the late 1930s, the Commanding Officer's Residence at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Darwin, or ‘Banksian House’ as it is known, was used to accommodate the Commander and provide short-term accommodation for dignitaries transiting through the base. The residence is heritage-listed and part of a historic precinct. It had retained its original overall form but was ageing and hadn’t been used since the 1990s. Aurecon designed and managed its restoration as part of the broader Defence Estate Works Program, revealing the fascinating story and hidden glory beneath the aged facade and interior.
