26 May 2022 – International design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VINCI Group’s SIXENSE to offer holistic solutions to assess dam safety in real time throughout the project lifecycle from construction to operation and maintenance.

The combined offering includes supply, installation and maintenance of dam instrumentation, automation of data collection as well as verification and quality assurance services. It brings together Aurecon’s engineering and advisory capabilities in the water sector with SIXENSE’s instrumentation and data management expertise for dams and the surrounding environment.

Aurecon’s Technical Director for Dams Bill Hakin said the partnership would create ‘healthy dams’ by ensuring the assets are continually monitored and their value is understood so that issues can be immediately addressed.

“The team will be building reports, dashboards and plans for dam owners and operators with the ability to set up alerts to inform emergency response plans, together with achieving optimal safety performance,” Mr Hakin said.

“Importantly, we will also be creating solutions to improve the safety of dam monitoring and investigation work by allowing engineers to use remote technologies, including drones and satellite remote sensing – interferometry synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) – photogrammetry and laser scanning to assess issues without having to be on site.”

Eric Audigé SIXENSE’s Managing Director for Oceania said the team will be using data to make better decisions on dam safety and operations.

“From data acquisition to data processing, storage, insights, reporting and visualisation, there is so much value that can be added from using dam data to inform ongoing engineering works and asset management and optimisation,” Mr Audigé said.

Aurecon provides a fully integrated dams engineering service – from planning and design, to operations, asset maintenance, optimisation and decommissioning, with dam safety management and risk assessment integrated throughout. Aurecon has delivered successful projects internationally spanning concrete, embankment, and composite dams, as well as tailings storage facilities. This incorporates all major structures such as spillways, outlet systems, and electrical and control systems.

SIXENSE provides instrumentation and monitoring, consulting, worksite digitisation and data management for construction and infrastructure projects, including for dams where it helps to manage ground stability, environmental impact and the diagnosis of the health of dams over time.

Aurecon and SIXENSE booths will be available to visit at the 2022 ANCOLD NZSOLD Conference in Sydney in October.

“As part of this event, Aurecon and SIXENSE will collaborate to run dam health checks for attendees,” Conference organising Committee member and NSW and ACT Dams Leader at Aurecon Niki Harandi said.

“The dam owners and operators will be engaged in a seamless interactive experience where they can learn about the latest digital technologies, innovations and engineering and advisory services that provide insight into the understanding of the health status of their dam and areas for improvement,” Ms Harandi said
