Overall Winner and Excellence Award, Infrastructure and Building, Engineers Australia, Western Australia Division
Standing over 240 metres high, Brookfield Place is the tallest and most notable landmark building on the Perth skyline. Reflecting the latest concepts in contemporary office design, gently integrated amongst a cluster of repurposed heritage-listed buildings, the development proudly represents the owner Brookfield Office Properties in what is now a vibrant social destination for those working and living in the city.
The efficient steel structure coupled with external bracing and energy efficiency makes this building an engineering highlight for modern office developments. The heritage elements were successfully conserved and interwoven within the modern design features, providing a safe, healthy and productive space for over 5 000 people.
Aurecon designed a unique structural stability system for the centrepiece commercial tower that helped to create floor plates that give occupants of the 47 story building outstanding views of Perth and its surrounds.
Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal Tropical Cyclone Yasi Recovery

High Commendation, Industrial Development and Manufacturing, Engineers Australia, Queensland Division
The Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal (LBST) is located on the North Queensland coastline and services export of raw sugar from the Herbert region. Its 5.76 kilometre long jetty and offshore wharf suffered significant wave damage following Tropical Cyclone Yasi (TC Yasi) as it crossed the coastline in the early hours of Thursday 3 February 2011.
Aurecon was engaged by Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) to provide a full suite of services to initially report on feasibility of repairs to the facility, and then to plan, design and manage the recovery project.
The terminal was safely and successfully returned to full operations on time and on budget, to the satisfaction of all stakeholders, and subtly but importantly reconfigured in a way that it will be significantly more resilient in the face of the unlikely return of a similar event in the future.
Translational Research Institute (TRI)
Excellence Award, Building Services, Engineers Australia, Queensland Division
TRI is the future of biomedical research in Australia. Combining the research intellect of four leading research institutes, TRI's 650+ researchers will discover new treatments and therapies to improve and benefit the health of people world-wide.
The 39 500 metre squared facility is inclusive of a variety of highly specialised spaces, including PC2 and PC3 laboratories, scientific support accommodation, a vivarium, high performance computing, state-of-the-art teaching spaces and various support infrastructure.
Aurecon provided structural, façade, electrical, dry fire and information and communications technology services for the facility. Our team worked closely with Brisbane-based architect Wilson Architects + Donovan Hill to deliver a new benchmark for laboratory excellence.
Eraring power station upgrade
Excellence Award, Engineers Australia, Newcastle Division
A major upgrade project was initiated by Origin Energy (formerly Eraring Energy), to integrate boiler and turbine upgrade technologies to maximise plant efficiency, and to reduce the carbon footprint of the Eraring Power Station as a New South Wales base load station.
The judges commented that the project is a very impressive example of advanced engineering analysis, design, fabrication, installation and commissioning. They said that modelling was extremely complex and innovative resulting in the development of 720 MW generating units with world leading generation technology.
The output capability of each of the station's four units was raised from 660 MWe to a demonstrated 750 MWe peak load under safe and flexible operating conditions. This has led to reduced coal consumption and carbon emissions.
East Intercourse Island Train Positioner
Excellence Award, Resource Development, Engineers Australia, Western Australia Division
In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore commissioned the replacement of its train positioner that had been servicing the rail car dumper at the East Intercourse Island port at Dampier in Western Australia since 1972.
Aurecon provided engineering design and commissioning services to FLSmidth Site Services (formerly MIE Enterprises) who were the Design and Construct Contractor for this critical piece of machinery that processes 47 million tonnes of ore per annum.
Aurecon's team engaged stakeholders to design the positioner for high duty and improved safety, operability and maintainability while working within the constraints of this brownfield site and limited shutdown window.
Azure Blue Redcliffe aged care facility
Winner, Best Construction/Engineering Project under AUD 100 million, Australian Institute of Project Management (Queensland)
The Azure Blue Redcliffe facility includes 122 independent living units across three buildings and a separate residential aged care facility with 96 high-care beds. The development promotes active lifestyles and fosters a sense of community through a range of recreation facilities.
Aurecon's role on the project was as project manager, contract superintendent and furniture, fittings and equipment (FF&E) manager.
"I firmly believe the completion of the project on time, and under budget, was a direct result of the project management methodology and controls implemented by Aurecon," said Michael Green, Blue Care, Manager Capital Development.
Through Aurecon's project management expertise, we were able to deliver a project saving of AUD 12 million from the original budget through strong scope management processes.
Royal North Shore Hospital Redevelopment
Winner, Large Commercial, National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), New South Wales
The Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) project is a $950M public private partnership (PPP) with Infrashore, a consortium of NSW Health Infrastructure (NSWHI), the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Thiess the head contractor.
This is a 600 bed acute hospital spread over 9 floors with a total floor area of 96,000sqm. The new acute facility includes a world class suite of departments including Emergency, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), medical imaging, and operating theatres with direct helipad access.
Aurecon was engaged directly to the electrical contractor (Star Electrical) undertaking the high voltage, low voltage, lighting and small power design as well as a review role of the contractor's security and communications design.
RAC Arena (formerly Perth Arena)

The RAC Arena is a 15 500 person capacity multi-purpose indoor entertainment and sports stadium that forms a critical component of the emerging multi-billion dollar Perth City Link project.
Aurecon worked in full collaboration with the Arena's architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Cameron Chisholm & Nicol to meet the client design brief and their design vision for a state-of-the-art world class facility to attract and host international calibre sporting and entertainment events.
Defined by its unique and cutting-edge architecture and sculptural form, Aurecon's innovative structural, façade and fire engineering solutions have helped to bring this iconic building to life.
The Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law
High Commendation, Building Services, Engineers Australia, Queensland Division
The AUD 570 million Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law, named in honour of Her Majesty the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year, is arguably the most significant new building built in Brisbane's CBD for at least four decades.
The building, which provides an open and visually 'clean' experience for all visitors and staff and is considered to be the landmark building of the Queensland judiciary system, has set a global benchmark for innovation in large public buildings and courthouse design and construction.
With a simple, yet strict architectural vision set by Architectus and Guymer Bailey, Aurecon's design included a range of innovative engineering responses to support this vision including; a unique façade system; floor framing system which employed long spans and upturned beams; and extensive use of fire engineering modelling to support this range of alternative building design solutions.
