Camilla Gibbons

Winner – New Zealand Young Engineer of the Year
Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand

Camilla Gibbons, a senior engineering geologist at Aurecon has been recognised for her excellent contribution as an engineer and leader, and for her involvement in the community.

As team leader for Aurecon’s Christchurch earthquake recovery effort, Camilla led a team of ten engineering geologists, undertaking rockfall remediation, land movement monitoring, and cliff collapse assessment work in the Port Hills.

Camilla is an active member of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society, the International Association of Engineering Geologists and a member of her local community’s redevelopment scheme for the Sumner area of Christchurch.

Dr Jan Kupec, Technical Director, Ground Engineering, says: “Camilla consistently upholds and demonstrates the core values of an engineering practitioner. With her ongoing career developments and achievements she is a role model for our emerging professionals. She has an amazing professional career in front of her.”

Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel

Winner – Water Waste and Amenities
Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand

To protect and improve the quality of Auckland’s beaches, a new tunnel and outfall was constructed, which allows high quality treated water to be discharged 2.7 km offshore, compared to the previous distance of 600 m. The 3 km long segmented line tunnel travels from the Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant to Mairangi Bay.

Aurecon delivered all the detailed design for the tunnel, the marine outfall pipe and the 38 m deep cascade drop shaft, which was the first use of a cascade in New Zealand.

North Shore City’s Council General Manager Infrastructure Services, Geoff Mason believes that strong relationships resulted in the project’s success. “These strong partnerships have allowed all parties to play a proactive role in achieving innovative and effective solutions throughout the project”, he said.

Air New Zealand Nelson Hangar

Winner – Building and Construction
Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand

Aurecon was the structural engineer for a new hangar facility at Nelson Airport. The hanger is a large 80 m x 60 m free span structural steel building with a clear height of 9.5 m and overall height of 15 m to the apex.

The roof structure was built on the ground with all cladding, insulation, lighting, heaters, and cabling fitted at ground level. Following construction of the roof structure, the roof was jacked up onto concrete columns and the wall cladding finished. A joint free post-tensioned floor was then poured inside the closed in hangar.

Stephen Hogg, Technical Director, Buildings, said: “Aurecon’s solution met the client’s size requirements, ensured a shorter construction period and allowed for cost savings in steel and carnage due to the simple fabrication.”

SH20 Waterview Connection

Silver Award
New Zealand Institute of Surveyors

Geoff Munns and Mike Pinkerton won a silver award of excellence for the state highway connection tunnel and road interchange project in Waterview, Auckland. The judges particularly noted “the challenging schedules and high standard of deliverables” and the “innovative approach using Google™ earth, internet delivery of results, laser scanning and software adaptation”. Client satisfaction was a high rating factor, as was an adherence to timeframes and the project coming in below budget and to the client’s benefit.
