The SH20 Waterview Connection in Auckland forms part of the Western Ring Route (WRR), New Zealand’s largest transport project and a ‘road of national significance’.
Aurecon was initially commissioned by the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to prepare the procurement documentation for a competitive alliance tender, and to undertake a review of the concept design prepared for the Assessment of Environmental Effects for the SH20 Waterview Connection Tunnels and Great North Road Interchange package.
Following a gap analysis, Aurecon identified the need to undertake value engineering work. Several design optimisations were recommended, including reducing the tunnel diameter size and revising the fire and life safety strategy, resulting in significant budget savings.
Waka Kotahi subsequently engaged Aurecon as their Technical Advisor during the procurement process. Aurecon has since assisted Waka Kotahi with the introduction of three new aspects to their successful Alliance Contracting Model, including a 10-year DCMO obligation, a Geotechnical Baseline Report, and an Owner’s Verifier role.
Aurecon is currently acting as the Owner's Verifier to Waka Kotahi for the delivery of the project.
In 2011 the project received a silver award of excellence at the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Awards.
