Aurecon finalist in the UN Australia World Environment Day

UN World Environment Day

02 July 2009 - Aurecon was one of three finalists in the prestigious United Nations of Australia World Environment Day Awards in the category of Szencorp Green Building Award.

The nominated project was for Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s new headquarters located in the centre of Bendigo. The building achieved the first certified 5 Green Star environmental rating for regional Australia and predicted 5 Star NABERS Energy rating.

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank partnered with the City of Greater Bendigo to revamp the Bath Lane precinct. The redevelopment occurred on an entire city block bordered by Bath Lane to the east, Mitchell Street to the north and High Street to the west.

The six-storey office building, including retail on the ground floor, accommodates more than 900 staff. The building includes one of the first large-scale application of under-floor air conditioning in Australia, an innovative external sun screening design to the large west facing facade, and water savings through blackwater recycling.

Aurecon as building sustainability consultant has played a key role in developing, with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and the design team, a range of key environmental initiatives for this project.

This is the second time Aurecon has been nominated in this category. In 2005 Aurecon won the United Nations World Environment Day Awards for 40 Albert Road, the first retrofit in Australia to receive a 5 star rating under the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating System. It also achieved a 6 star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

“It is an honour to be nominated again for such a prestigious award recognising Aurecon Sustainable Building Design services are of world class standard.” said Peter Mathieson, Project Leader for both projects.

The estimated construction cost was $57.5 million for base building and $15.75 million for integrated fit out.

The Presentation evening was held on Friday 5 June at the Grand Hyatt, Melbourne.
