The proposed development at 32B Shantung Street, known as ONE SOHO, was successfully completed in March 2023 and has received the Commendation Merit in the Hong Kong Residential Projects category for its transformative impact.
This landmark project, spearheaded by Aurecon, offers 322 residential units, a one-storey clubhouse, three storeys of retail shops, and a one-storey car park with two levels of basement.
Aurecon was commissioned for the multidisciplinary design of the permanent works, which included structural and geotechnical engineering. In collaboration with the leading consultancy P&T Architects, Aurecon developed an innovative design for the foundation, earth retaining structures (ELS), and superstructure.
Situated in one of Kowloon’s busiest areas and surrounded by buildings over 50 years old, the project faced significant challenges due to its congested and narrow site. Situated next to Langham Place and near Nathan Road, the area experiences heavy traffic and pedestrian activity at all hours.
The inherent site constraints prompted all parties involved to identify potential risks and challenges during the design phase that required careful planning and resolution.

To overcome site limitations, computational design and digital engineering were essential, with Building Information Modeling (BIM) used during the schematic design stage. The project also involved several engineering disciplines, including structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and drainage, as well as facade and architectural work. Full BIM modelling was used for design and coordination throughout the project. All discipline-specific models were integrated into a single model for coordination and conflict detection.
Additionally, precast facade, a common construction methodology in Hong Kong, was utilised to shorten the construction period for certain facade elements. The precast components were constructed in mainland China under the supervision of qualified personnel and could be directly installed onto the superstructure upon arrival in Hong Kong.
Envisioning a sustainable and energy-saving design, a kinetic floor slab system has been proposed for the shopping arcade, where it can harness energy from visitors’ movements. This system maximises electricity generation based on foot traffic. Additionally, hybrid lamp poles are installed along the site boundary as part of the energy-saving strategy. These poles use both solar and wind energy, providing lighting to the public at night without drawing electricity from the building.
The project's commitment to innovative and sustainable design and construction practices has further solidified its status as an iconic redevelopment initiative recognised by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA). Additionally, this commitment to environmental sustainability earned ONE SOHO the Grand Award in the New Building Category (Completed Projects – Residential) at the Green Building Awards 2023.
Wilson Sung, Director of Operations and Structural Lead of Built Environment in Greater China at Aurecon, expressed, "The Commendation Merit for ONE SOHO is very encouraging. Witnessing the positive impact of our urban transformation efforts resonating within both the community and industry is truly rewarding."
Construction of ONE SOHO culminated in a successful completion in March 2023, with Certificates of Completion (CC) granted in July 2023. The project has revitalised a series of ageing buildings into a vibrant residential and commercial hub, breathing new life into the local neighbourhood.
