Aurecon has played a key part in the evolution of the MCG for over 20 years.
In the early 90s we were engaged for the design and construction of the Great Southern Stand, achieving a remarkably short 15 month construction programme. More recently, we engineered the refurbishment of the Great Southern Stand to reflect the amenity expected in a modern grandstand.
We were also appointed by the MCC to transform the MCG for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, ensuring that the “People’s Ground” met and exceeded social and regulatory expectations and reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s great sporting icons. Whenever a tram has flown into the stadium, or a Russian cosmonaut has crashed into the centre square, Aurecon has provided the engineering to make it happen.
We incorporated environmentally sustainable initiatives into the redevelopment where feasible. Advanced engineering modelling analysis was used to make the best use of natural or passive features of the building structure such as orientation, ventilation and solar shading.
Innovative design solutions included the naturally ventilated atrium spaces identified using daylight studies and thermal modelling. The large cantilevered seating areas, a feature of the stadium, were developed using advanced analysis methodology and criteria, creating significant savings for the client.
Aurecon has strived to maintain the high standard of amenity through subsequent additions to the stadium, in projects such as the Hugh Trumble Café terrace, Stumps Bar, the “Smart Stadium” upgrade, and other similar modifications, as the MCC strives to maintain their status as a benchmark for world class facilities.
The MCG Northern Stand now offers exceptional viewing, comfort and amenity, achieved through a sustainable design. Furthermore, the much anticipated 100,000 capacity mark was achieved in time for the Commonwealth Games of 2006. To this day the MCG is a globally recognised landmark on the Melbourne skyline.
