In a move that signifies the future of sustainment in the maritime sector, in October 2022 the Commonwealth of Australia (the Commonwealth) partnered with BAE Systems Australia on a six-year contract that revolutionises the approach to sustainment of the Royal Australian Navy's Hobart Class Destroyer (DDG) fleet.
With a focus on optimising their capabilities, BAE Systems Australia was appointed as the Capability Life Cycle Manager (CLCM) for the three DDG – HMAS Hobart, HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Sydney. This marks a significant milestone as the first major in-service asset to adopt the Maritime Sustainment Model outlined in Plan Galileo.
Under this new approach, BAE Systems Australia will guide the DDG fleet throughout their capability lifecycle, while working alongside the Navy and enterprise partners to deliver this vital capability. This innovative approach is an integral component of the Australian Government's investment into establishing a secure, sustainable, and continuous naval shipbuilding and sustainment capability in Australia.
To support a seamless transition, Aurecon partnered with BAE Systems Australia to bolster their support to the Royal Australian Navy in optimising and delivering naval fleet sustainment outcomes.
Aurecon’s Transformation and Change Advisory team has been working hand-in-hand with BAE Systems Australia to design and implement an organisation transformation program to support this initiative. Aurecon was embedded in the CLCM Transition Program office providing change management leadership and support for the transition.
Throughout the program, Aurecon worked with BAE Systems to shape the future CLCM organisation with a focus on outcomes while creating an environment that allowed people to thrive during change.
In the maritime domain, operations are often characterised by intricate logistics, evolving technologies, and stringent regulations; adaptation is not merely advantageous but imperative. By leveraging Aurecon’s maritime capability in this area, Aurecon has supported BAE Systems Australia in delivering on their commitment, as well as supporting the objectives outlined in the Defence Strategic Review.
The partnership underscores the importance of transformation and change and the role it plays within the delivery of complex programs and strategic initiatives of national importance, while fostering growth and resilience.
The achievements of BAE Systems Australia and the momentous milestone of launching the first CLCM is set to have a lasting impact on Defence as it establishes an optimised way to sustain and upgrade Navy platforms. Moreover, this initiative contributes to Australia's overarching Defence strategy and supports a continuous naval shipbuilding industry in Australia.
We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively across this six-year contract to invest in new approaches, a future of continuous naval shipbuilding and improved naval platforms for the Royal Australian Navy, and, subsequently, genuine sovereign capability to Defence.
