What makes me really excited about pumped hydro projects is the nature of the project, bringing people, disciplines and scientists together, and the location. Pumped hydro projects can take you to places that you normally don't go. They’re normally in remote locations, because you need a lake, you need a reservoir, you need a big piece of land. You normally get to locations to build these projects, which are not too close to urban areas. That's an exciting part of the journey of building a pumped hydro project for me.
We have lots of experience in tunnelling in Australia for other industries, including transport. We have a large mining industry in Australia, so the collective experience in underground work of infrastructure and mining will definitely help the pumped hydro projects to deliver the design and construction.
The geotechnical risk for any underground pumped hydro project is the first risk they need to be aware of. They need to design through this risk. Other risks include the location, supply, logistics and the other restraint that you normally have with these projects, including the resource, and the people who are required to build the project. It has been mitigated successfully on many projects, but you need experienced people to do this, and you need proper planning from day one to achieve the goal.
