A landmark in Australia’s continuing story of structural engineering excellence, this major addition to Sydney’s underground metro system integrates a new station and pedestrian tunnels beneath Australia’s busiest rail terminal.

The judges singled out the ambition of the design and complexity of the work undertaken, exemplifying thoughtful structural planning and clear technical leadership.

"Central Station’s extensive metro transformation is the embodiment of combining technical excellence, the confidence to explore what’s possible, intentional innovation, and human judgement, to deliver impact"

Tanya de Hoog, Aurecon Chief Engineering, Eminence and Innovation Officer

Tanya de Hoog, Chief Engineering, Eminence and Innovation Officer at Asia Pacific engineering consultancy Aurecon, said the success of Central Station’s metro upgrade was a credit to the engineering team that used ingenuity and innovation to navigate complex design and delivery challenges to find a functional and elegant solution.

“Central Station’s extensive metro transformation is the embodiment of combining technical excellence, the confidence to explore what’s possible, intentional innovation, and human judgement, to deliver impact,” de Hoog said.

Aurecon Managing Director, Transport Scott Smith said, “Sydney Metro Central Station stands as a testament to collaborative engineering excellence. Delivered within a live, heritage listed environment, this project prioritised commuter convenience and safety without disrupting 270,000 daily passengers.”

“Through bold innovation and meticulous planning, we’ve played a key role in delivering a sustainable, world-class transport hub that revitalises Australia’s busiest interchange,” Smith said.

Chair of the IStructE judging panel, Professor John Orr, said that in an incredibly high-calibre playing field, Sydney Metro Central Station clinched a well-deserved victory.

“The ingenious top-down construction method and reimagining of the reference design really showed how structural engineers can lead high-impact infrastructure from below ground and upwards,” he said.
