International design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon has been appointed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore to provide engineering consultancy services for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (SPLRT) Line.
The project encompasses the methods and design to replace 40 bridge bearings across 13 locations within the SPLRT network. This initiative is a proactive effort to safeguard the long-term resilience of the LRT network while elevating its overall reliability and performance.

Bridge bearings are vital components that require timely replacements to ensure smooth operations, safety, and comfort for commuters. Over the course of the 5 year-long maintenance programme, Aurecon will be tailoring a meticulous construction delivery plan and methodology for LTA.
This includes strategies for placement of temporary jacks, best practice approaches for bearing replacement operations, guidance on the most suitable bearing systems, and the establishment of safe construction access.
Careful consideration will be taken to maintain the full operational status of the LRT line as well as its interface with adjacent residential, commercial, and utility zones. Paramount importance will be put to collaborating closely with affected stakeholders to identify and effectively mitigate any potential impacts on the community.
Aurecon’s engagement in this project builds upon our prior experience on the SPLRT network. Prior to this appointment, Aurecon conducted an engineering study on the SPLRT Line as part of LTA’s regular periodic structural inspections.
“We aim to overcome the various challenges to replace these forty bearings by proposing innovative and practical solutions for site implementation. The successful delivery of the project would require balancing technical requirements, site / structural constraints, and the public’s convenience. Novel and innovative methods would be proposed and we will work closely with all stakeholders to bring our ideas to life for the successful project completion,” Eko Irwan Abadi, Technical Director, Bridge and Civil Structures at Aurecon.
“The SPLRT line plays a crucial role in connecting the vibrant residences of Sengkang and Punggol to key amenities, workplaces, and educational institutions. Leveraging our deep engineering expertise in bearing replacements, we are privileged to have this opportunity to collaborate with LTA and to contribute towards the continuous improvement and future resiliency of the SPLRT line,” says Jean-Marc Girard, Chief Operations Officer, Asia who is currently leading Aurecon’s Singapore business.
Stephane Asselin, Chief Executive at Aurecon Asia added, “As part of our Blueprint to 2025, growth in Asia is a big focus area for Aurecon. This esteemed partnership with LTA reaffirms our team’s deep rail and mass transit expertise and remarkable growth in the Asia infrastructure space. We are excited to embark on this collaboration and look forward to bringing to life LTA’s vision for a reliable, people-centred and sustainable transport system.”
Aurecon has been delivering innovative solutions to enhance rail and mass transit developments both locally and globally. In Singapore, Aurecon’s cadre of infrastructure experts are also delivering major transport projects such as the Sengkang-Punggol Depot LRT Expansion, the Cross Island Line (CR108) project, as well as the J102 and J109 projects on the Jurong Region Line.
Beyond Singapore, Aurecon has successfully delivered the East Rail Bridge Bearing Replacement in Hong Kong and have also been selected by MTR Corporation recently to plan and design the new Hung Shui Kiu Station on the Tuen Ma Line.
