As districts are the beating heart of any country, their transport connections characterise the well-being of people by creating access to jobs, education, and leisure activities, boosting economic development through movement and place.

To better serve residents and meet long-term public transport demand, a total of 25 new trains will be delivered (18 after the depot’s expansion and a planned additional 7 in the future).

Aurecon is the lead consultant, working in collaboration with Land Transport Authority, client and contractor, Sato Kogyo Singapore, to manage design of the Sengkang depot expansion. This will ensure the new fleet has the required space for stabling and maintainance. Aurecon is also providing design improvements to the existing depot, while improving the working environment with new infrastructure added.

Tripling the size

To increase its capacity for maintenance facilities, the depot will more than triple in size, from 3.5 to 11.1 hectares. In its lead consultant role, Aurecon is providing rail alignment expertise, civil and structural and building services design, with subconsultants providing architectural, fire life safety engineering services, and acoustic design services.

Working in a live environment

The expanded depot will include two new reception tracks to shorten train launching time, and three new traction power substations to support the operations of the new trains. Situated above the metro’s North East Line’s depot through Sengkang, construction works must be conducted over a live operating rail environment. This is a significant challenge for the project team.

To ensure the project is carried out efficiently, effectively and safely without disruption to daily operations, Aurecon has adopted a user-centric approach from conceptualisation to design and construction. This includes tailoring the design to suit the construction sequence and methodology to accommodate the requirements of a fully operational rail network, as well as to deliver an expansion that seamlessly complements the existing North East Line depot technically and aesthetically.

Structural designs account for serviceability and vibrations from the underground train line, and Aurecon will manage the balance between the progress of the build and maintaining the level of service required.

Design for maintainability

By putting in place enabling measures and frameworks for design development and construction staging, Aurecon is assisting Singapore to successfully introduce an expanded depot for its burgeoning fleet of trains.

In space-constrained Singapore, it is important to consider how the depot can be accessed for future repairs and maintenance. Together with the Land Transport Authority project team, Aurecon is designing with the practice of integrating operations and maintenance considerations into project planning and design to achieve effectiveness, safety, and economy of maintenance tasks during the lifespan of the facility.

At project commencement, Aurecon established communication between the project teams and key operations and maintenance personnel to identify and clarify hazards and discuss and develop ideas on the prevention or elimination of these through design implementation.

This flexible and interactive approach is helping mitigate risks throughout the project development process and provide the delivery of robust solutions within the extremely tight project delivery timeframe.

Aurecon is proud to play a key role in realising this important infrastructure project in Singapore’s land transport development. This project will pave the way in Singapore’s journey towards achieving its vision for a reliable, people-centred and sustainable land transport system of up to 360 km of rail network by the 2030s.
