Gilghi is a sustainable off-grid water treatment solution that provides remote indigenous communities with access to clean drinking water.

8 July 2022 – International design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon, has been named as one of the top five sustainability leaders by the Australian Financial Review in its inaugural Sustainability Leaders list, in the category of Professional Services, Engineering and Advisory.

The recognition highlights Aurecon’s outstanding progress made on sustainability and places the company in a list of Australasian organisations making considerable strides in creating a more sustainable future and turning sustainability into a source of competitive advantage.

Central to Aurecon’s recognition is Project Gilghi, a multi-award-winning hybrid off-grid water treatment plant that pushed the boundaries of multi-disciplinary design and collaboration.

Aurecon Group Director, Sustainability and Managing Director, Energy – Australia and New Zealand, Paul Gleeson commented “We are proud to be in the company of leading organisations that are making real differences in sustainability.”

Project Gilghi delivered a multitude of benefits to the local community and broader industry to help close the gap on indigenous inequality. The local community in the Northern Territory can now access safe, clean drinking water, provided in an economic and viable way for the first time in history, without needing access to main water or grid power.

“Our pursuit to create a better future for people and the planet has also seen us embed sustainable practices into every aspect of Aurecon’s operations and project delivery. Guided by the company’s environmental strategy, we focus our actions on six areas that will help create a healthier future, for people and for our planet: carbon footprint, leadership, partners, people, projects and stakeholders ,” Mr Gleeson said.

“In the past 12 months, we have doubled the size of our Sustainability and Climate Change team , with the mission to help clients mitigate the risks while seizing the opportunities of climate change. The team now boasts truly eminent leaders in the sustainability space, offering our clients a full-service model across climate transition, physical risk and overall sustainability strategy.”

Assessment methodology of the Sustainability Leaders incorporates both qualitative and quantitative elements to assess innovations based on value delivered for society and/or the environment, as well as the business itself. Applicants were required to prove demonstrated leadership and impact on the business and wider industry or market.

“Engineers, designers and advisors today should explore and leverage every opportunity to help the community and economy transition to a more sustainable future,” added Mr Gleeson.

Aurecon is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact and has committed to becoming net-zero in its operations by 2025.

Aurecon has also acquired four companies over the last 12 months – ERE Consulting Group, Acuity Sustainability Consulting Limited, Acumen Environmental Engineering and Technologies Limited and Acumen Laboratory and Testing Limited (Acuity and Acumen) to strengthen and broaden Aurecon’s environmental, water and sustainability capabilities in Greater China and across Asia.

In April 2022, Aurecon was recognised as Large Firm of the Year for a second time at the OneConsult Awards for Excellence 2021.
