31 August 2022 | 2 min

International design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon has delivered the engineering design for the new Allianz Stadium, featuring one of Australia’s most complex stadium roofs that uses 40 per cent less steel in construction compared to traditional stadia. The stadium officially opened to the public on Sunday 28 August.

Aurecon’s digital engineering capabilities and methodical approach saw a range of civil, structural and building services delivered to the 42,500 seat stadium in 2.5 years, with the first elements of roof steel ordered within three months after commencement of construction.

Aurecon CEO, William Cox said that the company was thrilled to have helped transform Allianz Stadium into Sydney’s new landmark, attracting the world’s best events for better community connection and economic prosperity.

“The jewel in the crown is the sweeping roof that perfectly embodies original architectural aesthetics. We pride ourselves on not only designing one of the most technically complex stadium roofs in Australia, but also being part of the project team that delivered it on time and budget despite numerous disruptions by the pandemic,” Cox said.

Aurecon’s Project Director for Allianz Stadium, Joe Pirrello said the project team adopted a holistic approach to the design and construction.

“Buildability, cost-effectiveness, aesthetics, sightlines and sustainability are among our key considerations in design.”

The 25,000 sqm roof is in a “Pringle” shape sitting atop the stadium. It contains almost 5,000 individual pieces of steel and was erected in large pre-assembled modules, which were prepared on the pitch safely and then lifted into place. This method resulted in improved safety through minimal connections required at heights.

“Rather than assuming a conventional role in project delivery, we sought to identify key design drivers in the client’s decision-making to directly address the fundamental challenges.”

Critical to the efficient design and construction of the stadium were the project team’s innovative digital workflows, including one based on a ‘single source of truth’ data model for all sub-consultants.

“The innovation enabled seamless translation of all necessary metadata into any of the modelling software used by engineers, architects, builders, fabricators and shop detailers, saving the project up-to six weeks as models could be updated and coordinated within hours, rather than days or weeks,” Pirrello added.

Venues NSW and Allianz Stadium CEO, Kerrie Mather commented, “With the doors to Allianz Stadium open now, we’re so excited to welcome the community back to explore the venue’s many key features.

“This is truly a state-of-the-art venue that provides better accessibility, is sustainably designed and built and will create an unrivalled event experience.”

Aurecon has played key roles in both Allianz Stadium and CommBank Stadium, two of the most prominent stadia in Sydney over the past couple of decades.

Aurecon’s stadia portfolio features the renowned Wembley Stadium in the UK, TEDA Soccer Stadium in China and Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Also known as the Sydney Football Stadium, Allianz Stadium is funded by the NSW Government and delivered by project partners Aurecon, Cox Architecture, John Holland and Schlaich Bergermann Partner.
