13 October 2017 - Our Global Director of Excellence & Expertise, Dr Kourosh Kayvani has been appointed as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE).

“Dr Kayvani is a creative thought leader. Through his relentless pursuit of excellence and a hunger to supersede engineering limits, he leads our practitioners to achieve the extraordinary in engineering innovation and design,” says Giam Swiegers, Global Chief Executive Officer Aurecon.

“Kourosh’s contribution to the prestige of the structural engineering profession has been achieved through his technical and leadership accomplishments which, when combined, have seen him increasingly play the role of a modern custodian of his profession,” adds Swiegers.

“It is a great honour to be appointed as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering,” says Dr Kayvani.

“I am incredibly fortunate that every day I am able to work with my colleagues, clients and across our industry to help shape the future of engineering and design offerings to better serve the needs of our communities,” added Dr Kayvani.

Some of Dr Kayvani’s high profile projects include Wembley Stadium with its iconic arch that is one of the world's longest spanning roof structures. Over the past few years, he has also been leading Aurecon’s team who are involved in building the complex roof of West Kowloon Terminus in Hong Kong; the largest infrastructure project currently under construction in the country.

In addition, he has played a pivotal role in upgrading many of Australia’s sporting facilities over the last 20 years. His project engagements include the original iconic roof of Skoda Stadium (used as a Baseball Stadium at the Sydney Olympics), Sydney 2000 Olympics Hockey Centre, the extension to Sydney International Aquatic Centre, Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Redevelopment, Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand roofand Perth Arena.

Dr Kayvani is also the founding Dean of the Aurecon Design Academy; an industry first in-house mastery school designed to create future-ready design practitioners in a transdisciplinary learning environment. Kourosh developed the Design Academy’s syllabus in collaboration with Aurecon colleagues as well as external collaborators from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).

“I believe that every engineer should not only seek to become a master of their craft but also strive to make the impact of their expertise highly visible to and understood by the public through powerful story-telling. They should also seek to collaborate across disciplines and sectors,” said Dr Kayvani.

About Kourosh Kayvani

Dr Kourosh Kayvani is Global Director of Excellence & Expertise at Aurecon. In his 28 years in the industry, he has played key roles in engineering for many award-winning projects across the globe.

In 2006, at the age of 39, he won the prestigious IABSE Prize from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering for his work on long span structures worldwide. He was listed in Engineers Australia’s (EA) Top 100 most influential engineers in 2009 and won the prestigious John Connell Gold Medal from EA’s Structural College in 2016. Kourosh has held Professorial appointments at the University of Sydney and University of New South Wales (UNSW) for the last 10 years.

Dr Kayvani obtained his B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) at Tehran University in 1988, after which he moved to and made Australia his permanent home. In 1992, Kourosh completed a M.Eng.Sc. (Structural Engineering) at UNSW, Sydney and later his Ph.D. at UNSW, Sydney in 1996. He has been an Australian citizen for 20 years.
