The project was also recognised for outstanding ITS mechanical engineering solutions including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, fire and hydraulic engineering, field of play, structural engineering, civil engineering, architectural lighting, and wind engineering including the construction of a detailed scale wind tunnel model using stereolithography (rapid prototyping), and acoustic engineering.
The award-winning project was fully documented using Building Information Modelling (BIM). The virtual construction of the project using the BIM process for design and modelling was a key factor in the project’s success.
Concluding comments from the judging panel commended the project team for its enduring enthusiasm and passion for client vision, and its collaborative, team-centric ethos.
“The client envisioned a ‘world class stadium in the heart of the city’ and that’s what our project team delivered,” remarked Aurecon Project Leader, Derek Broome.
“It’s fantastic to think that our people and teams have led the design and delivery of Adelaide’s very own international, world’s best practice sporting and entertainment icon. The project is a testament to the incredible engineering feats that can be achieved when shared vision and collaborative teamwork is prioritised above all else.”
The big-ticket project has already exhibited its serious patronage appeal with the 53 500 seat stadium hosting over 1.1 million visitors since opening its doors for the international Ashes series in late 2013. It is expected to generate over AUD 200 million of wider economic activity for the city of Adelaide and South Australia annually.
