Angela Chang is a Civil and Water Engineer who started in February 2023 as an Aurecon graduate in the Land and Water team. Being part of the Land and Water team enabled Angela to contribute to a wide range of projects and create a significant impact on sustainability and the community.
During her time at Aurecon, Angela has experienced significant growth in both her soft and hard skills as an emerging young professional engineer. She has also expanded her professional network both within and outside her team by participating in various projects and team social events.
My favourite subjects in high school were physics and calculus, which naturally led me to choose engineering as my undergraduate degree. However, as I progressed in my journey as an engineering student, I was increasingly fascinated by the ability of engineers to transform ideas into real-life projects.
I began considering water resource management because water is a crucial resource for future generations. So, I decided to focus on water management and hydraulic engineering during my last year at university to engage in projects that would allow me to positively impact communities and shape the future.
My role as a civil engineer primarily focuses on three waters projects. Three waters are the three main types of water infrastructure in New Zealand – stormwater, wastewater and drinking water. In my role, I design assets to help clients manage these infrastructures safely and sustainably.
I have learnt how to use software tools like 12D to draft a design surface for overland flows and ArcGIS to assess the wastewater conveyance network. Additionally, I am involved in creating carbon baseline assessments for current and future water-related projects to measure and reduce potential carbon emissions, and ultimately create more sustainable utilities for the community.
Through these projects, I have acquired a range of skills, including technical proficiency, critical thinking in developing engineering drawings and most importantly, communication skills.
As a newcomer to the field, I have realised that communication is the cornerstone of project success. This involves asking questions frequently and conversing with other professionals in the company to learn more about other projects and career paths.
One of the best aspects of working at Aurecon is the hybrid environment. I personally enjoy coming to the office every day because it allows me to interact with my colleagues, which is something I value most at work. Plus, there is the added perk of grabbing free food and nibbles!
However, when I need to concentrate and work on tasks independently, I can opt to work from home and communicate with my team through emails and online meetings. Moreover, the flexible working hours allow me to start work early on certain days and finish a bit earlier, providing me with a better work-life balance.

I was nervous about starting in a new workplace but since joining Aurecon, I have found the culture to be so welcoming and everyone is patient when explaining things to new graduates like me.
In our Land and Water team, we have a networking session every week where we gather to play mini games and chat over baked goods which we bring and share with the team. We also have regular career planning and development sessions with our team leaders called "Let's Talk” which has helped me to navigate my career journey. Aurecon provides plenty of opportunities for graduates to network with various professionals across the business.
