Whether you're applying for internships, preparing to graduate or stepping into your first professional role in engineering consulting, there can be a lot to think about – and it's completely normal not to have everything figured out yet.
To help navigate the next step, we spoke with Kim Evans and Breann Dias from Aurecon's Early Careers Recruitment team about the advice they most often share with students and graduates. While every career journey is different, these five mindsets and behaviours can help build a meaningful graduate career and set you up for long-term success.
Before you start exploring opportunities, take some time to understand your strengths, interests and values. While your degree is important, employers in engineering consulting are also interested in the experiences, skills and qualities that make you who you are.
"One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that students think they need to have their entire career planned out," says Kim. "You don't need all the answers. What's more important is understanding what motivates you, where your strengths lie and being open to learning along the way."
Reflect on the skills you've developed through study, work, volunteering, sport or extracurricular activities. Understanding what energises you and where you add value can help you identify opportunities that align with your interests and long-term goals.
At Aurecon, we know that diverse thinking leads to better outcomes. The unique experiences and perspectives you bring can help challenge assumptions, solve problems in new ways and contribute to work that has real impact.
Whether it's connecting with peers, mentors, academics or industry professionals, building a professional network can help broaden your thinking, expose you to different career pathways and provide valuable support throughout your career.
Professional networking is often viewed as something formal or intimidating, but the most valuable networks are built through genuine relationships.
"Building relationships isn't transactional,” says Breann. "It's about being genuinely curious, learning from different perspectives, and creating meaningful connections that can support your growth throughout your career."
Networking opportunities can come from many places, including industry events, volunteering, professional associations and online communities. The conversations you have today can often lead to insights and opportunities you never expected.
At Aurecon, our Limelight network helps early career professionals connect with colleagues across the business, creating opportunities to learn, share experiences and grow together.

Engineering consulting is constantly evolving, driven by emerging technologies, sustainability challenges and changing client needs. One of the most valuable skills you can develop early in your career is continuous learning.
Continuous learning isn't just about formal education. It comes from asking questions, seeking new experiences, exploring different perspectives and being willing to take on challenges that stretch your thinking.
"Some of the biggest growth opportunities come from experiences that feel a little uncomfortable at first," says Kim. "Don't be afraid to put your hand up for something new or take on a challenge that pushes you outside your comfort zone."
At Aurecon, we encourage continuous learning through practical experience, mentorship and formal development opportunities such as our Learning Series and Leadership Series, which provide exposure to different disciplines, leaders and ways of thinking. Staying curious can open doors throughout your career and help you discover strengths you didn't know you had.
Feedback is one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional development, yet many people wait for formal reviews before seeking it out.
Building the habit of asking for feedback early in your career can help you better understand your strengths, identify opportunities for improvement and accelerate your growth over time.
"People who develop quickly are usually the ones who actively seek feedback and genuinely reflect on it," says Breann. "Feedback isn't about getting everything right, it's about learning and improving."
Some of the most valuable lessons also come from challenges and setbacks. Taking the time to reflect on what didn't go as planned can help build resilience, strengthen your skills and prepare you for future opportunities.

Ambition is important, but so is recognising that building a meaningful career takes time.
Many students and graduates feel pressure to have a detailed career plan or achieve rapid success. In reality, careers in engineering consulting rarely follow a linear path. The experiences that shape your future often come from unexpected opportunities, projects or conversations.
"Careers are journeys, not sprints," says Kim. "It's great to have goals, but it's equally important to stay open to opportunities that might take you somewhere you hadn't originally considered."
One of the best ways to accelerate your professional growth is to seek exposure to people who inspire you. Throughout your career, look for opportunities to learn from leaders, subject matter experts and people with different experiences to your own. Their insights can challenge your thinking, expand your perspective and help you see possibilities you may not have considered.
Aurecon interns and graduates have opportunities to connect directly with leaders across the business through initiatives such as our Leadership Series, gaining insight into how they approach complex challenges, make decisions and apply emerging technologies, including AI, in their work.
There is no single formula for building a successful career. What matters most is staying curious, being open to learning and taking ownership of your career development.
By understanding your strengths, building meaningful connections, seeking feedback and embracing opportunities to grow, you'll be well placed to navigate the opportunities and challenges that come your way.
You don't need to have everything figured out today. Focus on taking the next step, staying curious and building a career that evolves with you.
