The Victorian Government selected Aurecon, together with Alliance partners CPB Contractors and Arcadis, to deliver level crossing removals at four of Melbourne’s priority sites that included Blackburn Road in Blackburn, Heatherdale Road in Mitcham, and Main and Furlong roads in St Albans. The Alliance also included VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and was overseen by the Level Crossing Removal Authority.

The 480 million dollar package of works saw rail lines lowered under the road at each of the locations and new stations built at St Albans, Ginifer and Heatherdale. Train platforms were also relocated to below street level.

A multidisciplinary and collaborative Alliance

Aurecon drew expertise from teams across transport, infrastructure and built environment to provide a full package of engineering services. This included rail, civil, bridges, station design and support throughout the entire construction life cycle.

Aurecon has worked closely with VicRoads, the Level Crossing Removal Project, local councils and Alliance and construction partners to manage State Government approvals to facilitate the removal of level crossings, and delivery of new stations and public open spaces.

This included the planning and delivery of removals at Furlong, Main, Blackburn and Heatherdale Roads as well as the multi-award winning Caulfield to Dandenong, plus the delivery at Evans Road and Cardinia. Aurecon has also provided the planning of Burke and North Roads as well as Bayswater (Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road).

Aurecon also worked on the Fitzgerald and Robinsons Roads crossing removal projects.

Navigating the complex planning approvals, and delivering solutions that improve connectivity, is critical for the timely delivery of the Victorian Government’s commitment to increase public safety, facilitate micro-economic efficiencies via improved traffic flow, increase connectivity and revitalise communities.
