The concept behind a sports stadium has come full circle. From a place to see favourite athletes pitting their skills against competitors, to a modern Colosseum where the public gather, clutching smart phones, for a multimedia and multi-sensorial experience.

Key aspects of designing sports stadia, including technical and commercial considerations to ensuring game-changing sporting facilities, is evident on the new Joel Selwood Grandstand at GMHBA Stadium at Kardinia Park in Geelong, Victoria.

Aurecon has extensive knowledge and years of experience in the design and delivery of AFL stadia across Australia, either new facilities or upgrades to existing venues. This includes our long association with Kardinia Park over a 20-year period. Most recently completed was the 14,000-spectator capacity Joel Selwood Grandstand at the northern end, which was the final piece to complete multi-tiered seating to the full perimeter of the stadium. Its western end features a double-sided function room that provides views to the stadium as well as the adjoining cricket ground for the Geelong Cricket Club.

The redevelopment also includes an indoor cricket hub located alongside a new northern stadium entry plaza, a sports museum, player facilities, and new bars. It includes a loading dock with access from the adjacent city street for seamless deliveries of food, beverages, and equipment. This project rounds out extensive capital investment into the stadium and provides a coordinated and cohesive design for spectators and the stadium operator.

Aurecon was the structural and building services engineer for the project, which included the replacement of the existing Ablett Terrace and Ford Stand to make way for the new multi-deck grandstand. Overall, the stadium’s capacity has increased to more than 40,000.

The GMHBA Stadium and Kardinia Park precinct has a long history dating from the late 1800s, hosting numerous significant events each year. Whether it’s an AFL match, T20 cricket, or one of the many community events held at the stadium, patrons can now make use of the newly completed Joel Selwood Grandstand and associated northern plaza.

Aurecon is proud to have contributed to this particular project, but also to the many other capital works undertaken across many years at this stadium. This has included the Reg Hickey Grandstand, Premiership Stand, Players Stand, precinct sports lighting, and the Brownlow Stand, as a trusted partner to the stadium operators over a period in excess of 20 years.

The new Joel Selwood Stand provides patrons with a new northern entry into the stadium, enhanced food and drink facilities and a sports museum. The project includes sustainability measures such as solar panels to the roof and bio-retention basins for reducing stormwater runoff rates.
