One of Asia’s largest aviation projects to be undertaken at the time, the Hong Kong Airport Terminal Building serves as an important facility for the region
Annual passenger capacity exceeds 35 million
Designed for service, passenger comfort, simplicity of layout and energy efficiency
Aurecon's role: Project management, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, communications engineering and transport
Architect: Foster + Partners
Client: Provisional Airport Authority
Aurecon, as part of a consortium, undertook the design management, full engineering and systems design for the 490 000 square metre passenger terminal building (except the roof and facade).
As annual passenger capacity for Hong Kong Airport can exceed 35 million, a vital consideration of Aurecon's design was to emphasise the level of service, passenger comfort, simplicity of layout and energy efficiency.
Suffused in natural light, the processing hall atrium area is surrounded by external glass made from breakthrough material that allows daylight to filter through, while reflecting solar heat to minimise cooling loads.
The communications systems take advantage of world-class technology, enabling up-to-date information to be shared between all terminal building users via a central database.
Aurecon has continued to work with Hong Kong Airport, completing the Sky Plaza (Terminal 2), the North Satellite Concourse project and additional term consultancies.
