Woodlawn Wind Farm, Australia

The Woodlawn Wind Farm is located in the Capital Renewable Energy Precinct, 70 km north of Canberra. It consists of 23 x 2.1 MW wind turbines with an installed capacity of 48.3 MW. The wind farm is located at the site of the existing Woodlawn Bioreactor and is connected to the national electricity grid via the existing Capital Wind Farm substation, 12 km south of the Woodlawn site.

Aurecon was engaged as the Owner’s Engineer for the construction of 23 Suzlon S88 2.1 MW turbines and associated electrical reticulation, control, civil and structural works. Our role included project management, design review and full-time construction monitoring.

To complete the project, Aurecon utilised a full-time, site-based project manager/onsite representative responsible for the coordination of design reviews and site inspections, and the provision of contract administration advice, as well as all other project management functions.

The wind farm utilises existing high-voltage infrastructure and is an important addition to Infigen Energy’s wind farm portfolio. The project brings the number of S88 turbines in the area to 90 with a total installed capacity of 189 MW.

The green energy produced by the Woodlawn Wind Farm will be enough to power approximately 32 000 average Australian households annually, and represents a saving of approximately 138 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year. The payback period of the embodied energy of the entire wind farm is approximately five months.
