Hydrogen is expected to play an integral part in a decarbonised and diversified future. Organisations across every sector – from oil, gas and mining through to water, energy, transport and property – are seeking to decarbonise and optimise their operations and supply chain.

If globally, economies are to achieve this, together with maintaining food and fuel security, and jobs in response to climate change transition risks, then alternative products must be part of the mix.

Hydrogen and its derivatives are part of the option set to enable this. Industry forecasts predict that global demand for hydrogen will exceed 500 million tonnes per annum by 2050 when compared with today’s modest demand of 90 million tonnes per annum. This has implications on the capacity of future industries to be able to extract, transport, manufacture and use hydrogen as its current state of adoption is varied across the maturity curve.

Regardless of where sectors are along the maturity curve, looking forward, hydrogen can realise economic, environmental and social outcomes with a new approach to energy and commodities. While the pathway ahead will not be without its hurdles, the acceptance that transition is occurring at a rapid pace is raising the power of hydrogen to be able to unlock integrated solutions.

Hydrogen is one of the enablers for the transition to net zero. It’s a form in which renewable energy can be shipped and consumed around the world.

Ways to unlock the hydrogen advantage

The climate change transition is not simply a move to cleaner fuels or like-for-like replacement of raw material and energy exports. Instead, it is a complete metamorphosis of the energy commodities ecosystem. Such a fundamental shift in customer expectations and global market dynamics means there are significant opportunities for organisations and countries within the hydrogen economy.

How can Aurecon help you transition to the hydrogen economy?

Optimising the hydrogen opportunities and approaches for the climate transition requires a mix of technical and advisory expertise. At Aurecon, we work with a wide range of clients including developers, transport agencies, water utilities, resources companies, energy network providers and large organisations to identify opportunities in hydrogen to support decarbonisation, energy transition and emerging industries.

Our work sees us engage a wide range of stakeholders from technology providers and contractors through to communities, regulators and policy makers. As such, we are in the unique position of integrating each of the elements that impact the development of hydrogen opportunities. This includes environmental assessment, planning and management to guide environmentally sustainable and responsible development.

Our commercial, advisory and engineering knowledge and expertise supports clients with constraints mapping of the geographic location of viable hydrogen projects, and the unique elements of its use. Our techno-economic modelling can determine a levelised cost of hydrogen using geographic and location agnostic parameters across a range of potential scenarios.

Each hydrogen project or strategy will have a distinct purpose, however, the inclusion of levelised cost into a multicriteria analysis will result in designs with process, technical and regulatory risk built in. With our range of capabilities across the markets we work in, we’re able to draw that experience together for application on different hydrogen projects, strategies and business models.

Aurecon advocates pursuing a suite of initiatives to ensure a successful holistic approach that sees technological, commercial and industrial interests enabled by hydrogen. Contact one of our team below to find out how.
