Damon Howes, Managing Director for Defence and National Security at Aurecon, said the awards are a testament to not only Aurecon’s leading project and program management expertise but also recognition of Aurecon’s long-standing partnership with Defence in delivering capability outcomes.

“We are delighted to receive these awards and recognition at a national level. We appreciate the high quality of all the deserving finalists and that this made the independent judging role that much harder. These results recognise the achievement that comes from strong partnership alignment with our Defence client and having a deep understanding and respect for their drivers, values, and objectives,” Mr Howes said.

“It is also empowering to see the joint Defence-Aurecon Ascend Program recognised for the impact we are making together in transforming the trajectories of our organisations, the mindsets of our people and creating a ripple effect of what it means to be deliberate in actioning the gender gap of women in leadership.”

Troy Burton, Managing Principal for Program Advisory at Aurecon, added that the awards speak volumes about the quality of Aurecon’s project management professionals and commitment to achieving project excellence across all project types and sizes.

“These awards represent the knowledge, passion and dedication of our people and how they provide clients with certainty of project outcomes.”

Aurecon is a proud Organisation Partner to the AIPM and continues to support the profession through our Supporting Partner sponsorship of the national event.

Winner: Transformation Projects

To increase gender diversity at executive levels in the Australian Government Department of Defence, Aurecon joined forces with Defence to create the leadership and development program: Defence-Aurecon Ascend. This transformational program influences organisational and cultural change within Defence by breaking down the process and behavioural barriers within a historically ‘hierarchical’ organisation.

Ascend is now a significant part of both the Defence and Aurecon gender equality strategy and is an evidence-based, best-practice development program that aims to inspire, develop, and support high-potential women to step into leadership roles. The program also develops participants’ courage and capability to set up and drive business outcomes, and to challenge the status-quo.

Winner: Small Projects

Constructed in the late 1930s, the Commanding Officer's Residence at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Darwin, or ‘Banksian House’ as it is known, was used to accommodate the Commander and provide short-term accommodation for dignitaries transiting through the Base.

The residence is heritage-listed and part of a historic precinct. It had retained its original overall form but was ageing and hadn’t been used since the 1990s. Aurecon designed and managed its restoration as part of the broader Defence Estate Works Program, revealing the fascinating story and hidden glory beneath the old façade and interior.

Winner: Project Professional

Carlene is a Certified Practising Project Manager with exemplary skills in project management, team leadership and client engagement. As the Project Delivery Services Portfolio Lead for Victoria and Tasmania, Carlene is instrumental in developing and delivering diverse projects to improve the Department of Defence’s capabilities in these regions.

Winner: Future Project Leader

Cameron is a Certified Practicing Project Manager specialising in program management, managing all aspects of program design, procurement, and construction delivery. Working within Project Delivery Services at Aurecon, he has managed an AUD 70 million (per annum) construction program for the Department of Defence for two years.

With a client-focused and commercially-oriented approach, Cameron successfully delivers complex programs of multi-disciplinary projects across New South Wales while managing and growing a team.
