Aurecon’s engineering excellence across key commercial property markets has been recognised at last week’s Property Council New Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry awards held in Auckland and World Stadia awards in Qatar.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki was the supreme award winner at the NZ Property Council awards. “Aurecon was pleased to have played a role in this project by working with the architects to design the building facade”, said Adrian Muir, Technical Director, Buildings.

“The project team not only kept Dulux producing paint but reduced planned production shutdowns to only 20 working days in nearly two years of construction”, said Sean Gledhill, Technical Director.
Dulux’s New Zealand Operations Manager, Dougal Hamilton described the project as “exemplar of true collaboration between client, consultant, contractor and site operations, resulting in a stunning success for Dulux.”
The Peak, an 11 storey tower in Wellington, was awarded a merit in the Multi-Unit Residential Property category. Aurecon provided structural and geotechnical services with a feature of the project being Aurecon’s innovative seismic resilient design. The fast tracked construction was completed on budget and six weeks ahead of schedule.
A finalist in the World Stadia awards and excellence award winner in the NZ Property Council awards, Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, is the world’s only permanently covered stadium with a natural turf playing field. Through rigorous testing and full-scale computer modelling, the design team was able to verify that strong, healthy turf could grow under a fixed roof made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE).
“Considering Dunedin’s location and project restraints, we were punching well above our weight. It is an outstanding achievement of which all of New Zealand should be proud,” said Stewart Barnett, Project Delivery Team Chairman.
“Being an award finalist on a global stage generated good exposure for Aurecon and we made some valuable connections,” said Genevieve Stockwell, Project Manager, Qatar.
Excellence award winner in the Special Purpose category, the Lakeview extension at North Shore Hospital in Auckland provides a new admissions unit, and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with a two angiography suites, as well as modifications to the existing emergency department and a new CT for the existing radiology department. The project features a double glazed low e curtain wall facade with excellent views for patients to Lake Pupuke.
Aurecon provided all building services engineering and fire engineering and completed a full 3D model of the services in 3D REVIT.
“The inclusion of stormwater harvesting and 60ºC heat pump chiller have resulted in lower water use and cut gas consumption at the hospital to less than the usage before the extension,” said Adrian Muir.
Aurecon was also involved in the following projects recognised by the NZ Property Council:
“These award wins represent Aurecon’s breadth of expertise in building design as well as our capacity to provide world-class solutions,” added Adrian.
A record 82 properties were finalists in this year’s NZ Property Council awards. Projects were judged on the economic viability of the property, design and construction, efficiency of operation, owner and user satisfaction, contribution to the community, potential cultural and social benefits, degree of difficulty associated with the development and incorporation of environmentally sustainable features.
Nominations for the World Stadia awards were received for over 100 stadia around the globe. The awards showcase engineering excellence, sustainable design, innovative technology use, venue functionality, integrated masterplans, and iconic stadia.
