Technical innovative finisher evaporator and lactose concentrate

With the aim of increasing the recovery of lactose at the Fonterra Hautapu Dairy Factory site, Aurecon carried out process, mechanical, electrical and automation design for the new evaporation plant, specified new equipment, prepared contract documents for installation work, and commissioned the completed plant.

Aurecon designed and installed a technically innovative finisher evaporator and lactose concentrate load-in facilities to achieve the project objectives.

Aurecon’s innovative design provided extended product run times, improved product yield, reduced water and chemical requirements for cleaning, and lower product losses. It also generated less waste water than existing evaporator options.

The project resulted in increased lactose production, achieved through increased run times between plant cleaning and through process improvements that increased product yield.

The process engineering design was critical to the success of the project, with the new finisher evaporator resolving plant performance deficiencies associated with lactose concentration.

Aurecon’s design minimised evaporator tube fouling resulting in less cleaning and lost production time, and incorporated features to improve downstream lactose crystal growth.
