As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Vietnam is rapidly planning and building power plants to meet both its current needs and to provide a sustainable infrastructure for future growth.
Logistically remote, the Nhon Trach 2 - 750MW combined cycle power plant is situated 35 km from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. The plant will serve the Nhon Trach Industrial Park and will connect to the Vietnamese national power grid through a 220 kV transmission line.
The project is Vietnam’s first to have two engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors working together, namely PetroVietnam Construction (PVC) and Lilama. EPC contractor PVC, responsible for all civil and most building structural work, has teamed up with Aurecon to provide design and project management for the civil engineering role for this substantial project.
Two specific project challenges faced were the requirement for new methods for ground improvement and the project’s aggressive schedule. Aurecon worked closely with our client in a project management capacity to bring clarity to many of the technical and contractual obligations of the project, as well as providing constructible designs.
The design work began in mid 2009 and is progressing on schedule. It is expected that Aurecon’s project management input will continue into 2011. The client met their obligations as an EPC contractor and has achieved early completion on many of the project deliverables.
