Star Petroleum Refining Company (SPRC) is an independent energy producer in Thailand that needed to expand their tank farm storage facilities with an additional six above ground storage tanks in order to accommodate increases in production.

Accommodating increased production

Aurecon was engaged to deliver the detailed design of Cathodic Protection systems (CP) for the tanks which were of various sizes (ranging from 16 metres in diameter to 92 metres in diameter). Aurecon was also asked to manage construction and commissioning of the CP system.

Cathodic Protection is crucial to protect buried structures from corrosion – a major concern for oil and gas operators. The impacts of a forced plant shutdown due to facilities leakage from corrosion can cost millions of dollars in lost production.

A detailed audit of the existing seventy four tanks was undertaken to assess the best means for integrating the new CP system.

Aurecon worked closely with SPRC and its contractor, Chicago Bridge & Iron Thailand (CBIT), throughout all phases of the project to ensure that the CP system met the protection criteria specified by NACE standard and, more importantly, in meeting SPRC’s longer term reliability requirements.

The project was successfully delivered within budget and achieved the following outcomes:

  • The Jet Merox tanks are now all cathodically protected
  • The CP systems achieved the NACE criteria of -850 mV versus copper/cooper sulphate reference electrode
  • The CP systems are functioning satisfactorily

In delivering this project, Aurecon utilised the expertise of our materials technology specialists in Thailand. This was further augmented by high level technical support from our Australia office.
