Generating 416 megawatts of electricity for Western Australia
The Griffin Group initiated the construction of Western Australia’s first privately owned and developed two unit sub critical coal fired power station near Collie, approximately 200 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia. Bluewaters Power Station is now owned and operated by Bluewaters Power.
Aurecon was engaged by the EPC Contractor, IHI Corporation, to provide key support services undertaking the role of Contractor’s Technical Manager, providing design, contract specification, tender and administration services for Balance of Plant (BOP), as well as detailed earthworks and civil design for the site.
Aurecon’s services included site layout, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and control and instrumentation engineering, project/contract management and hazardous area assessment. Key responsibilities included bench and civil design and site layout, water treatment, cooling towers, fabric filter, coal plant and ash handling.
Aurecon also provided additional specialist services for:
Compliance reviews for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 85 and 850
Specialist fire engineering reports to enable NFPA, Australian Standards (AS) and Building Code of Australia (BCA) compliance
Station chemist support including advice on steam and cooling cycle quality control
Pressure vessel verification necessary for plant and boiler certification
Management of the BCA process with the local certifier
Completed in 2009, the Bluewaters Power Station has the capacity to generate 416 Megawatts (net) of electricity for Western Australia.
