Asia Pacific design, engineering and advisory company, Aurecon, is delighted to announce Sarah Ropata’s appointment to the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Australasian Board of Directors.
IAP2 promotes public participation and community engagement globally through targeted initiatives that are guided by culturally adaptive standards of practice and core values.

Sarah leads the Engagement and Change Advisory practice for Aotearoa, New Zealand, which includes a group of Engagement & Change practitioners committed to delivering positive social outcomes that enable diverse communities to thrive.
“Thoughtful early partnerships with Mana Whenua, informed consultation with stakeholders and accessible communication across communities that leverage our innovative digital platforms, form the foundations for successful infrastructure development,” Ropata said.
With over 25 years’ experience, Sarah has successfully led engagement and communications across the arts, land management and infrastructure projects and brings insights from this wide range of projects to help identify and navigate triggers and drivers for successful engagement outcomes and insights. She also brings strong leadership, risk and reputation management, and public and internal communications skills to any team mix.
Sarah’s enthusiasm and expertise in ensuring communities are involved in public processes and ensuring decisions include insight that deliver better outcomes, helped her get the support she needed to win the hearts and minds of IAP2 member voters across New Zealand and Australia.
“I am committed to work with the IAP2 Board, the newly formed Cultural Advisory Committee, policy makers and industry to support practitioners with influence and agile tools together with the data they need to deliver better results for infrastructure clients and communities,” Ropata continued.
“Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi, engari taku toa he toa takitini – My success is not that of one but of many”
Aurecon’s Principal, Engagement & Change Advisory Leader for Australia, Kylie Cochrane says, “I am so excited that Sarah was voted onto the IAP2 Board. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, with her in-depth understanding of mana whenua greatly benefiting the IAP2 Board and members.”
“I would also like to thank Melissa Creber, Aurecon’s Director – Engagement and Change Advisory – Australia who has represented Aurecon on the IAP2 Board for the last four years and will now be stepping down from her position. We are honoured to continue our support of IAP2,” Cochrane said.
