International design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon’s Paul Gleeson has been awarded Chief Sustainability Officer in the World Sustainability Awards 2022, recognising his efforts to lead the charge for sustainability within Aurecon and support some of the world’s largest carbon emitters with decarbonisation and climate action.
Announced in Munich at the World Sustainability Congress, the global awards recognised Paul’s efforts to build a team of 50+ people from scratch, establish Aurecon’s sustainability and climate change expertise, and develop sustainability targets, policies and pathways for Aurecon and its clients.

The World Sustainability Award judges were impressed by Paul’s clear leadership, his ability to embrace and articulate the importance of decarbonisation and his impact beyond Aurecon – which included advising globally significant renewable energy projects and energy transition policies.
"The most difficult thing to do is jump feet first into changing the cause of the issue. It is clear Paul had shown the leadership to do just this in the professional services sector working with the companies that can have the greatest impact," said judges from the World Sustainability Awards.
Paul Gleeson – whose role at Aurecon spans Group Director, Sustainability and Managing Director for Energy, Australia & New Zealand – said he was honoured to receive the recognition.
“The impact that leaders can have in this decade of action for climate change is incredibly important especially within the design, engineering and advisory services space,” Mr Gleeson said.
"We have the opportunity and the knowledge to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change through transition strategies and decarbonisation, and to assess and prepare for the physical impacts using science-based scenario modelling."
“We made a conscious decision to link our own corporate sustainability journey with the development of sustainability and climate change capabilities for our clients. A key example being the use of Aurecon’s external facing decarbonisation team to develop and implement Aurecon’s own Net Zero 2025 roadmap.”
Paul has over 25 years’ experience in transitioning different industries and governments to zero-carbon including one of the most globally significant and iconic projects, South Australia’s Hornsdale Power Reserve, a key technological innovation needed for the world to transition to renewable energy sources to combat climate change. He also led a team to deliver Aurecon’s Hydrogen for Transport Report, instrumental in informing Australia’s National Hydrogen Roadmap in 2021.
A fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Paul is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Certificate in Design Led Innovation from Stanford University. Paul is also a member of The University of Queensland’s Master of Sustainable Energy Advisory Board.
