22 November 2013 - Aurecon emerged victorious at the 2013 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards, scooping one of only six Excellence Awards handed out at the gala dinner held in Canberra on 20 November 2013.

Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) engaged Aurecon to plan, engineer and manage recovery of the Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal’s offshore facilities following Cyclone Yasi in February 2011, including inspections, design and documentation, contract packaging, expediting, construction management, and commissioning assistance.

A feature of the project’s engineering was a focus on understanding the Cyclone Yasi event, why damage occurred, and application of this in cost effectively designing the repair works to be more resilient to future extreme events.

The challenging project was delivered safely, within the original budget and to the insurer’s requirements; and on schedule to recommence full operations for the 2012 sugar season.

Aurecon Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal Cyclone Yasi Recovery Project Director, Arne Nilsen, said: “I am very honoured to have been part of the team to repair a facility that has an important place in Aurecon’s port and materials handling history and in Queensland’s sugar industry today. To receive recognition for demonstrating excellence, innovation and best practice is a great achievement for the Aurecon and QSL staff who worked on the project.”

The 2013 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards celebrated the accomplishments of some of the finest engineering companies and individuals in the world.

This project was also highly commended for Best Practice in OH&S at the 2013 Australian Bulk Handling Awards.
