Industry awards acknowledge contribution to communities

Torres Strait Regional Waste Feasibility Strategy

21 November 2013 – Aurecon’s contribution to the communities in which we live and work has been recognised by Engineers Australia through recent honours.

Sustainability award for waste feasibility study

Engineers Australia's Cairns Regional Group named the Torres Strait Regional Waste Feasibility Strategy the inaugural Sustainable Project of the Year on Saturday 2 November 2013.

Cairns Office Manager Pommer said that the judges seemed to be impressed with the short, medium and longer term implications for this strategy. "Given the environmental, health and economic challenges facing the local authorities when dealing with solid waste, this study identified strategic and operational processes that will provide practical sustainable benefits to the communities," he said.

Project Leader Danette McLean noted that the intent of the regional approach was to consider the needs of each local authority and its individual communities, while also considering where synergies could be achieved by dealing with issues on a regional scale. "Each local authority had its own challenges, but there were opportunities to achieve synergies in waste reduction, minimisation and disposal," Danette said.

R: Neil NaismithNewcastle Office Manager Neil Naismith, whose long involvement with Engineering Australia and many contributions to the engineering profession, has seen him named, among the true leaders of the industry and profession, as a Fellow of Engineers Australia.

Neil's 35-year career in engineering includes many years of plant supervision, process development and project management on projects such as a waste treatment plant at Onesteel that went on to win the New South Wales EPA environmental award.

It's this work that has helped him qualify for the fellowship, fulfilling requirements of holding "a sustained major responsibility in the design or execution of important engineering work", making "a major contribution to the science or practice of engineering", and achieving "exceptional eminence in the profession”.
