4 June 2013 - An Aurecon led consortium has been conditionally approved for nearly AUD3.5 million funding to assist with the design of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project after the Australian Government this week announced grants totalling AUD19 million for organisations from across the country which will be contributing to various work packages.
"This is a gigantic international science project that will change the way astronomy is done world-wide, and it will be co-hosted here in Australia," Minister for Science and Research Senator Don Farrell said.
If selected by the international SKA Organisation to carry out the infrastructure work package services, Aurecon will undertake infrastructure technical studies and design and costing work required to prepare the Australian SKA Phase 1 site for construction.
“We are looking forward to working collaboratively with the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory manager, CSIRO, as well as our other consortium partners in Horizon Power, RLB, AECOM and RQZ Solutions, to deliver the world's largest radio telescope,” Aurecon’s Industry Leader for Data and Telecommunications Steve Negus said.
“All the consortium members bring a wealth of practical experience and associated IP on SKA-related infrastructure projects such as the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), Murchison Support Facility (MSF) in Geraldton and the Pawsey supercomputer building in Perth.”
The expert assessment panel noted that Aurecon’s application was a well developed and effectively presented proposal with a well defined scope.
Aurecon will deliver multidisciplinary engineering services including civil, structural, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical and will provide RFI, building code and architectural technical input.
"These grants will help Australian organisations to win the opportunity to work with leading international players on the design of the SKA and, by doing so, demonstrate our world-class research and development capabilities,” added Senator Farrell.
