Aurecon supports nickel mine development in Vietnam

Ban Phuc Nickel Mine Process Plant

10 July 2013 - Saturday 29 June 2013 saw the official opening ceremony of the Ban Phuc Nickel Mine Process Plant in Son La province, North of Vietnam.

The Ban Phuc Nickel Project is the only one of its kind in Vietnam. As one of the few remaining high-grade, near-term nickel sulphide projects, it represents a unique platform to develop a significant nickel industry in Vietnam. The ore processing plant is expected to process 1 000 tons of run-of-mine ore per day to improve the nickel concentration from 2.2 per cent to 9.5 per cent.  The investor, Ban Phuc Nickel Mines is owned by Asian Mineral Resources Limited or AMR (90 per cent) and a Vietnamese company (10 per cent).

Among the senior guests attending the opening ceremony were the Head of the local province, Vietnam Vice Minister for Resources and Environment, Chairman and CEO of AMR.

Restarted in 2012, after being mothballed in 2008 due to economic pressures, the project to build the plant was carried out on a fast track, and took only 18 months. Aurecon provided engineering services including electrical and, control and instrumentation design, assistance to EPCM (engineering, procurement and construction management) and commissioning for the process plant, slurry line to the tailings dam, and the underground mine.

Steve Ennor, BPNM Metallurgy Manager said: “Ban Phuc Nickel Mines has a solid partnership with Aurecon in Vietnam that goes back many years and it was great to work with the team once again. Aurecon’s work on this fast track project has been critically important in what has been a challenging project timeline. A great deal of credit for a successful project opening belongs with the Aurecon team”.

Following the opening ceremony, Quang Nguyen, Aurecon Vietnam Country Manager said: “It has been very rewarding to be part of this project. Aurecon is grateful to Ban Phuc Nickel Mines for the opportunity to contribute to the success of this project and to the mining industry of Vietnam”.
